Romantic and quiet, the 4-star Villa Hügel spa hotel in Trier, Germany is affordable luxury with the most worth for the price. Here’s our honest personal review and recommendation.
Villa Hügel Hotel Amenities and Rooms
Entrance and grounds of this spa hotel
The rooms, spa facilities, pools, restaurants, lobbies, and bar were perfectly placed for light and view which meant the layout inside the hotel was a bit of a maze! But we got to know our way around quickly thanks to signage and helpful staff.

Parking is included with the room rate.
The grounds are beautiful and well kept, with a glass-enclosed gazebo, a koi pond, and a lower sunbathing area with gardens and lounge chairs. The heated rooftop infinity pool has a great view. An additional indoor pool with a Mediterranean theme is also heated which makes the relaxation areas and sitting alcoves warm and delightful with an atrium where you can soak up the sun. The sauna facilities are excellent, with dry saunas plus a wet sauna. Showers and toiletries are provided, guests just bring the dedicated fluffy spa towels provided in their rooms.

Textile-free in Spa Hotels of Germany
This area of Germany is known for its Bad, I mean “bod.” Look at the map and you see the word everywhere. Normally we want to avoid what’s bad, but not in this case. Bad in Germany is where you want to go! Bad means bath waters, spas, saunas, relaxing in luxury.

… no photos allowed in the textile-free zone!
And the best way to do that is textile-free (aka nude). Eek, my American sensitivities! I so wanted to try this but felt so awkward. Thankfully this spa was reserved for hotel guests, so it was very limited in use. I convinced CT to give it a try with me. We were able to test out rooms and dials and steams and streams without anyone else there at the time. It was a comfortable way to prepare for the public baths in world-famous Baden-Baden which was the next stop on our itinerary. Now we are bath house junkies!
Spa Hotel Room Recommendation
Our superior double room was spacious and comfortable, with a king-size bed, desk, loveseat, coffee table, lounge chair, and TV cabinet. It also included a coffee maker, minibar, and four handcrafted chocolates on arrival.

The bathroom was split, with the toilet separate from the sinks and shower. The main bath had a large tub with herbal bath salts, double sinks, a lighted makeup mirror, and luxury toiletries. Robes, slippers, and a dedicated spa basket with fluffy towels were also provided.

The large, secure balcony had a table and two chairs, plus a gorgeous view of Trier and a lovely tree that added privacy. Each of the 45 rooms in Villa Hügel are named after a great European city. Our room was the Lisbon; highly recommend. I gave this hotel 5 stars, everything about the stay, for me, was extraordinary.

Villa Hügel Breakfast, Restaurant, and Bar
The included breakfast offered many different foods from around the world, mirroring Trier’s international history. In addition to the cold options and fresh breads and pastries, a menu for cook-to-order meals is also offered. The dinner restaurant was superb and offered outdoor seating with an excellent view of the city. The bar also has dedicated, more casual, outdoor seating, perfect for their potent Aperol Spritzes.
Spa Hotel Location and parking in the city of Trier, Germany
The location was excellent—a perfect balance of a safe, upscale neighborhood on a hill above the city while also being close to the old city center. From the hotel, we walked along a green path to the Alstadt, safely crossing the train tracks and highway to get into the old city’s sites within about 10 minutes. With so many things to see, once we parked our rental car at the hotel’s parking lot, we did not use it again for the rest of our three-day stay.

Things to do in Trier, Germany:
We loved that the city preserves so much of its Roman heritage. The best ruin was the Kaiser Thermen, visible as you enter Trier; with half the exhibits underground, they are an excellent option in rainy or hot weather. Nearby, the palace garden is glorious, with art, fountains, and a cafe. A several-site stretch of religious architecture, from early Christianity to more modern periods, is also stunning. Following this line of sites brings you to the Porta Nigra (Black Gate), the remaining part of the ancient city entrance, where you climb the stairs for an excellent view down the old city street beyond the gate. The Roman amphitheater and Roman Bridge flank the old city and are both worth the walk, especially with so much to see in between.

Travel tip… pick up a planning map of Germany before your trip!
As part of the Mosel wine region, Trier has many wineries and restaurants. Bischöfliche Weingüte offered wine flights and knowledgeable guidance at a fair price. We also found a local hangout in the hotel’s hillside neighborhood and a casual lunch spot along the Moselle River.

Best time of year to visit Spa Hotels in Trier, Germany:
The hotel with its spa features and outside areas is perfect for any time of year. We visited in mid-September when the weather was still warm but not hot. European children were returning to school so the crowds had already thinned out. I also just found out that Trier has an excellent Christmas Market!
