Travel Destination Reviews: USA, Europe, and More

Looking for unique experiences? What makes Out This Door unique? Our travel destination reviews specialize in sharing hidden gems rather than the “must sees” that everyone else sees.

Trevi Fountain in Rome–nah, packed. Went to empty basilicas instead and stood at the feet of Michelangelo’s Jesus instead. Glencoe in Scotland–ugh, the traffic. We drove the single lane road in next valley over instead. At Yellowstone National Park’s seasonal opening, we missed the crowds by taking the side gate.

A middle-aged women smiles as she reads the wooden travel post listing: Sicily, Yellowstone, Scotland, Rhine River, and Puglia

Now we are sharing those destinations with you!

How We Travel

First: Hub and Spoke Travel Itineraries

We use regional hub-and-spoke travel itineraries which allow us to stay longer in a location. There we spend at least two whole days to explore either by foot or car. We find a balance of indoor sites, outdoor nature sites, city sites, and countryside drives. From the list of so many cool things to do, we pick what we feel like that day without cramming a lot of stuff in. This allows us to stay longer, stop more often, and smell the flowers.

Second: We Slow Travel

“Slow travel” is not about being slow people. Slow travel is a mindset. We rarely get advanced reservations. Instead, our open travel schedule allows for flexibility. We stay longer than it takes to get there. We stop to admire the scenery and people watch while others are crossing must-sees off their lists with barely a stopover.

Finally: We Find the Hidden Gems Destinations over Iconic Must-Sees

We prefer to go to the lesser-known places that are still just as awesome—and typically more so because there’s less tourists. The backdoor to Pompeii. The side entrance to Yellowstone. If there’s a line we don’t want to be in it. Even our hidden gems tend to be a layer or two deeper than those “Hidden Gems of (Wherever)” blog post that just recycle the same information. The off-season is our travel season. We brake for dams. Our day isn’t ruined if it’s raining at the ruins. Wondering goes hand in hand with wandering.

We are Out This Door. Are you with us?

First-Hand Experience is the basis for our travel destination reviews

Stays, eats, products, experiences, journeys–only if we have actually been there, done that.

We’ve walked up random stairs to a thousand year old fortress, bumped into an American icon far from home, stopped at the last vestige of a tower that once scared off pirates and saw the line of these towers stretching along the Adriatic coastline. Travel fosters the imagination, pop-rocks our taste buds, pushes us to acquire basic gibberish that we will never use again.
