10 Small Travel Essentials That Make a Big Difference

I love a good travel essential list—but sometimes I read one and wonder, Am I the only person who doesn’t need half of this stuff?

After years of traveling, I’ve learned that the things I appreciate most aren’t necessarily the newest gadgets or the cleverest travel accessories. They’re the small, practical items that solve an actual problem when I’m away from home.

My rule for small travel essentials is simple…

  • useful
  • lightweight
  • pocket-sized
  • inexpensive

If it’s useful, lightweight, small enough to fit in a pocket, and inexpensive enough that losing it won’t ruin my day, it earns consideration.

And my final most important test is…

  • Was my travel experience worse without it?

My ultimate goal is to answer yes to every criteria.

That’s what you’ll find on this list of small travel essentials that make a big difference.

All ten are lightweight, compact enough to tuck into a pocket or a small corner of your bag, and useful enough to earn a place in your luggage. And perhaps most importantly, they’re not precious. If one gets left behind in a hotel room or lost somewhere along the way, it’s not going to ruin the trip—or the budget.

These are the little things that make travel just a bit easier, more comfortable, and less frustrating.

And sometimes, those little things make a surprisingly big difference.

So, in no particular order of importance, here are 10 small travel essentials that make a big difference.

How it is useful…
When I finally gave up carrying my bulky DSLR and went completely to iPhone for lightweight travel photography, the thought of using a selfie-stick seemed childish. But without a tripod, I couldn’t get some of the shots that I wanted. Then I found a stick with tripod legs—a photography tool, not a toy.
 
What makes it worth the limited luggage space:
Pocket-sized • Non-magnetic (works with a phone that is in a case) • Inexpensive

How it is useful…
I came to Europe to see art and architecture, vista and skylines. But my birding binoculars are too big and expensive to take. After that first trip, I bought a small pair of pocket binoculars and it opened up a new world!  I have seen the expressions on the figures of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the spires of the Cologne Cathedral, the puffins off the coast of Scotland, and more—with none of the “lugging it around” neck pain!
 
What makes it worth the limited luggage space:
Pocket-sized and folds up to be even less than pocket size • Amazingly powerful (not your dad’s clunkers from the 70’s) • Inexpensive

How it is useful…
We walked into the Valley of the Temples in Sicily under a blue sky with puffy clouds and the promise of an incredible sunset. When we got as far from cover as possible, the clouds ganged up on us and dumped! We huddled under my tiny travel umbrella for the five minutes that the storm had us at its mercy. Then the storm was gone and the golden glow of the setting sun hit the Grecian columns.
 
What makes it worth the limited luggage space:
Pocket-sized • Lightweight • There when you need it.
 
Out This Door Verdict:
Honestly, if the umbrella hadn’t fit into my pocket, I wouldn’t have brought it. Lucky for us, it did! And I never did get it to fold back into its original tiny little shape. But at the price I found this pack for, I was okay tossing the one umbrella before we returned home.

How it is useful…
While many people use poppers on the backs of their phones, I never liked how a popper stuck out and got caught on my pocket. A phone hand loop, on the other hand, is totally low profile. In use it’s attached to me, not me to it, so in a moment of crisis, (such as a light stumble up a flight of stairs in Germany)—it was not letting go!

Paper thin, super strong • Easy to install with any case on any phone • Inexpensive

This is easy to install and so easy to use. Slip your hand through this thin, strong rubber strap and hold the phone as you normally would. Keeps you holding on to your phone when you trip, shake, or when a pickpocket wants to snag it.

How it is useful…
On the plane I am using this to read my paper book, of course, without lighting up too much of the space. At the hotel in the dark of night I’m using it to find the bathroom without tripping over my shoes. In a museum, I’m using the most powerful brightness to see the artwork in a little more detail. Later, enjoying the restaurant, I’m using it to read the menu, bending the gooseneck to point the light exactly where I need it.

Lasts for a month on one charge • Lightweight • The slimness of a pencil

Since I additionally use this booklight as a flashlight, it saves my phone’s battery life for the more important task of taking photos.

How it is useful…
I like reading my newsfeed before bed and that’s also time for me to charge the phone. On our first trip to Europe, I tried to save space by sharing a charger with my husband. This didn’t work for either of us! On our future trips we decided, “each person with a phone brings their own” charger/adapter.
 
What makes it worth the limited luggage space:
Smaller than universal adapters • Several plug in options including USB/USB-C • Comes in a two pack
 
Out This Door Verdict:
Since power outlets in Europe are different than in the USA, you need an adapter. It might as well do the work of both adapter and charger.  No need to share chargers, use long cords, or miss out on scrolling in bed with your phone halfway across the room. And when one did get left behind, like my hubby’s did in Pompeii, there was still one left between the two of us.

07 | Wired Earbuds

How it is useful…
My grown son (not a small man), suddenly gulped and shot up out of his seat, “my Bose!” He somehow pushed through the line of incoming passengers, made it back to our seats at the gate and got back with big, expensive headphones in hand, before the airplane doors were closed. What a relief!
 
But that’s too much stress for vacation! Wired earphones are perfect for vacation because they are simple, easy, and cheap.

Almost weightless • Inexpensive • Useful for calls, streaming, and photography.

How it is useful…

I get cold easily even in summer with the plane’s AC blowing on me! A knit cap and gloves set are the easiest way for me to keep warm no matter what season it is on the plane or on the ground!

The first place we don’t have cell coverage is the parking garage where we pick up the rental car. A folding paper map comes in handy literally within the first few minutes we are in country!

Out This Door Verdict
Call us old school but we like perusing a paper map before we go to get the big lay of the land. When in country, we use it to explore what else is on our route. And then when we are back home, sharing our stories with family and friends, a map puts all the stories and photos together.

Final Thoughts on Travel Essentials That Make a Big Difference

None of these items are going to transform your trip. That’s not really the point.

The best travel essentials are the ones that quietly make things easier. These are items that solve a problem, save a little frustration, or make an ordinary travel day more comfortable. When they take up almost no room in your bag, that’s even better. And none of these cost an arm and a leg!

For me, that’s the sweet spot—useful without being bulky, practical without being fussy, and inexpensive enough that I don’t have to worry if something goes missing.

Because packing for travel shouldn’t be about bringing everything you might need. It’s about bringing the things you will actually use to make the experience better once you’re out the door.
